How is pastoral counseling different from a clinical approach?

We are a pastoral counseling and care center. Our commitment to a Christian worldview and values prompts us to rely significantly on the spiritual resources of prayer, the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit in our counseling relationships. We also provide care by assisting with a variety of logistical needs and resources. While we may employ various clinical tools and resources, we do not offer diagnoses as a clinical counseling center or provider would. When such diagnoses are warranted, we make referrals to a network of reliable and qualified professionals, such as medical doctors, psychiatrists, or clinical psychologists.

God’s love leads to hope.
Renewal can begin today.

The Agape Counseling Journey

Introductory Session

Prior to entering a counseling relationship, we start with an introductory session by phone or video call to discuss what to expect during the counseling journey. To get acquainted, we will share who we are, our counseling philosophy and process, and counseling format. We will also gain a summary of your counseling needs and concerns. Upon agreeing to enter a counseling relationship, we will schedule dates for counseling offered in a 2-week intensive format Monday-Thursday via zoom.

Online Counseling

Our counselors are currently working from home, and all counseling is done via Zoom. We can occasionally accommodate in-person counseling by exception. Ask your counselor or our Guest Relations Coordinator for more information.

Holistic Personal Discovery

We will go through a personal discovery process to identify your counseling needs and goals. We are attentive to the whole person—spiritual, psychological, relational, and physical. As issues are identified in each facet of life, a therapeutic plan is developed, and resources are matched in response.

Tailored Counseling with Life Skills

We will tailor the counseling and pastoral care experience to your needs and incorporate life skills learning. Life skills are biblically based, and psychologically valid principles rooted in God’s truth that will enhance your quality of life and leadership effectiveness and help you finish well. Life skills address issues such as thought discipline, effective communication, building healthy relationships, dealing with grief, listening to the Spirit, and much more.

Intensive 2-Week Counseling Format

We operate on an intensive 2-week format. You will receive counseling sessions on four consecutive days (Monday-Thursday). Readings, videos, reflections, and journaling are assigned to complement the sessions. You should plan for two intensive weeks with the option for an extension.

Short-Term and Goal Oriented

Research has shown that short-term, goal-oriented counseling is more effective than long-term, open-ended counseling. With the help of agape counselors, you will develop a plan with specific goals based on your personal story and assessment results. This tailored plan becomes the framework for determining progress in the transformational process.

Assessments

Clinical assessment tools are used in the counseling relationship. Referrals can be made to professional specialists as needed and appropriate.

Facilitation of Services

We work diligently to facilitate services to assist you in experiencing a comfortable and efficacious visit such as assisting with resources, logistical needs, or referrals.

Closing Evaluation

At the end of the counseling period, we will evaluate our progress together and determine if further work would be helpful or if it is time to close our counseling and develop a follow-up care plan.

Optional Extended Counseling

After the two-week intensive, your AgapeHope team of counselors is available for ongoing connections as appropriate and desired. These periodic connections are tailored to your need. This allows you to stay connected with the AgapeHope team who will encourage growth in particular areas after intensive counseling is complete.

Cost

AgapeHope does not have a fee nor charge guests for counseling. We accept donations from the missionaries and pastors we serve. These donations are often in the form of leadership-approved transfers from a missionary or pastor’s ministry funds to AgapeHope.

A contribution equal to a minimum of $75 per person per day is appreciated. Donations can be made through our giving page or by mail.
